START REPAIR SESSION 5:35PM 4/17/2010 Presentation: Hewlett Packard Pavillion laptop, 17 inch, black in color, AMD Turion x2 CPU, 4GB RAM, 250GB hard drive, running Windows Vista Service Pack 2. Machine looks to have been taken care of well, racing an 8.5/10 on the Brent scale. Problem: Computer is completely unresponsive, slow, and takes approx. 18 minutes to boot to usable condition. Optical drive eject button seems unresponsive, taking the right kind of "push" before drive will pop open. Suspected viruses/malware and possibly hardware problems. Hard drive is suspected to be bad or going bad; Western Digital Data Lifeguard v 5.04f diagnostics shows primary SATA drive returns error of "0007: REPLACE PRIMARY HARD DRIVE." The drive did not pass S.M.A.R.T. testing. Proposed solution: A new hard drive needs to be installed. After discussion with owner, it has been decided for myself to purchase a new hard drive for the laptop. Primary drive will be replaced with exact same hard drive, reformatted, and reinstalled with factory software to new condition. All important data such as pictures, music, and documents have been backed up onto an external hard drive and will be transported to the new installation. Backup DVDs have been made for the reinstallation of software on the new hard drive, and basic programs will be installed (Office 2010 Professional Plus, Antivirus, Antimalware, Utilities such as PDF and RAR programs). Data copied back onto new installation to desktop to be reorganized and put in its proper location(s). Additional diagnostics on new hard drive ran, as well as complete physical of entire machine. Actions taken: New hard drive has been purchased from Newegg.com and has been installed in old drive's place. Hard drive was fully formatted for first time usage, with an NTFS partition table and properly aligned. HP restore DVDs created from original hard drive were used to install Windows Vista SP2 on the laptop. All updates from Windows Update are downloaded and installed. List of programs has been installed on the computer. User data has been copied onto the desktop for sorting and replacing in its proper locations. Model numbers: Western Digital 250GB SATA1 2.5" 5400rpm Hard Drive - WD2000BEVS-60VTS0 Additional notes: I decided to replace the hard drive in this machine because it was acting extremely flakey. While the hard drive still works, it's spindle speed had been reduced to less than half of it's original capability. Due to the 0007 error it was likely the hard drive would only hold out for another week or two tops. To avoid losing all data, the hard drive replacement was the only logical solution. Laptops in general tend to run hotter than their desktop counterparts, but I have noted higher temperatures inside this computer than I had anticipated. CPU temperatures were reported in the 60-65 degrees centigrade range, sometimes reaching as high as 70 degrees. High temperatures like this diminish the life of the processor. Normally I might replace the processor heatpipe/fan inside of the laptop or even reapply thermal compound on heatpipe for better heat dissipation, but I am not sure of the warranty in place on this machine or even if there is one, so I will forego this measurement. Will advise customer that a cooling base/station might be a good investment for this laptop to use while sitting at a desk. Laptop should never be sat on a bed or surface that can trap heat; this can cause the laptop to overheat and shut down. As long as the CPU temperature stays around 60 degrees though, overheating should never be an issue with this machine. Same applies for the GPU (video chipset). Owner should definitely look into upgrading to Windows 7 in the near future if finances allow. The laptop is more than powerful enough to run the operating system, and it also will allow for better control of cooling the CPU, allow the computer to be more stable and enhance performance, and will improve battery performance.
